Asante Kotoko and Ashgold will renew their rivalry in the maiden John Agyekum Kufuor Cup at the Baba Yara Stadium today.
The duel which kicks off at 3 PM is not just the first outing for both sides this year, but also the first between the two Ashanti Region clubs whose games have been christened as Golden Clash.
Asante Kotoko come into this clash having had an upsurge in form under coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor.
The Porcupine Warriors are playing in the 2018/19 CAF Confederation Cup where they have eliminated Kenya’s Kariobangi Sharks to book a playoff date with Cameroon’s Coton Sport next week.
Ashgold, on the other hand, have boosted their squad with the addition of the former Asante Kotoko duo Eric Donkor and Sadick Adams and aim to have a good start under new coach Svetislav Tanasijevic.
But, this is a clash that defies form and personnel and making it more pulsating is that the two sides have unfinished business after each side beat the other 3-2 at home in September last year in the two-legged Golden Clash.
The Porcupine Warriors will hope to start the year with a win and a trophy to also put their emotions in the right perspective ahead of their trip to Cameroon this week.
But, the lads will have to sweat for it against the Obuasi lads who treat games against Asante Kotoko like their very lives depended on it.
The Porcupine Warriors and the Elephants have won two games each and drawn once in their last five meetings in all competitions.
Asante Kotoko scored seven goals in those games and conceded eight times, and their best win was a 1-0 triumph at the Len Clay Stadium while the visitors' was a 2-0 win at home.
